Head Coach: Dean Henze
Dean has over twenty years of swim coaching experience, and is heading into his 3rd year with SLSC. His successes have included coaching multiple swimmers to Provincial tour teams, Canada Games, and International tours. Dean’s commitment to professional development and coaching is strong. His involvement in Swim Ontario has included the Ontario Swim Coaches Association (OSCA) Board of Directors, Ethics Chair, and the development of the LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) model. Currently Dean is the NEOR coaches representative on the NEOR board of directors.
Dean is originally from Atikokan, Ontario where he swam for a number of years before attending the University of Manitoba. While in Manitoba Dean worked with the Manitoba Marlins, University of Manitoba and the Selkirk Dolphin swim club. Dean’s goal in coaching is try and get the most out of each athlete that they can give and show them that they can achieve great and wonderful things in the process.
Assistant Head Coach - Phil Parker
Coach Parker is entering his 14th season of coaching with the Voyageurs and his third season with the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club. It is his 7th year as head coach of the Laurentian Voyageurs swim teams as Phil spent the first five years coaching with Dr. Jeno Tihanyi and learning from one of the world’s best.
In his first year as head coach, Coach Parker produced two OUA Champions and had three CIS finalists. Since that first season, Coach Parker has produced an additional 6 OUA Champion gold medal winners, 13 CIS finalists and has had 5 consecutive years producing Laurentian University Athletes of the Year. Over his five years as head coach, Coach Parker has sent 29 swimmers to the Canadian University (CIS) National Swim Championships and has had swimmers reach finals in each of those championships.
A graduate of both the B.Sc. (Kinesiology) and M.Sc. (Human Development) programs here at Laurentian University, Coach Parker is able to help his swimmers not only achieve great feats in the water, but also helps his student-athletes succeed in the classroom as well. Coach Parker is a Level III certified coach and a member of the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association. Both Coach Parker and Coach Delorme take it upon themselves to not only teach these individuals to swim fast, but also to prepare these student-athletes for the world that awaits them after university and swimming is over. The skills acquired from this program will put these individuals a step above the rest once they graduate.
Outside the pool, Coach Parker is also a part-time professor within the School of Human Kinetics here at Laurentian University teaching 1st year undergraduate students Anatomy and Kinesiology, along with a 4th year Biological Growth and Maturation coarse. Phil also enjoys traveling, mountain biking, and live music. He is a huge hockey fan and is the king of winning hockey pools throughout the city. Coach Parker lives with his wife Tamara here in Sudbury.
Eric McLaughlin
Coach Eric will be entering his 5th year of coaching and his 4th with the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club (SLSC). Eric spent his first year of coaching with the St. Thomas Aquinas swim team of Brampton Ontario and has since joined with SLSC. Eric has a plethora of competitive swimming experience spending nine seasons with the Cobra Swim Club.
Eric is a graduate of the Sports Psychology program here at Laurentian University and intends on obtaining his masters and PhD in Sport Psychology. Eric is thrilled to be working with SLSC once again and intends on teaching each swimmer the value of hard work and positive attitude that will allow each of them to succeed in and out of the pool.
When Eric is not on the pool deck he spends his time keeping up with the Toronto Blue Jays, Nintendo Wii and of course his studies. Eric lives here on the Laurentian campus at Huntington University and is the Residence supervisor.
Pieter Breijer
Coach Pieter has been with the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club for the last 5 seasons, but is no stranger to the pool. Pieter has been a recognized face at Laurentian’s Avery Building for nearly a decade working as a Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor before joining with SLSC.
Pieter is a fun-loving individual who takes pride in seeing swimmers of all ages and skill levels succeed in the water. A child at heart, Pieter enjoys being in the water with his swimmers and developing their abilities to ensure that all his athletes learn the value of competition, as well as social skills which will be an asset to his athlete’s personal development later in life. Coach Pieter enjoys working with all levels of the swim club and believes that through hard work, discipline, and a 'Can-do' attitude his swimmers will become the best they can be.
Pieter has earned his Honors Bachelor Degree in Law and Justice in the spring of 2008 from Laurentian University as well as his certification in Human Resources Management from Cambrian College in the spring of 2009. Pieter will be completing the requirements for the National Knowledge Exam in October of 2010 to attain the first level of a professional designation in the Human Resources Profession. Pieter has completed the requirements for his Fundamentals Coaching Certification from the NCCP.
Outside of SLSC, Coach Pieter enjoys life through a number of different activities, including Long Distance Running, Men's and Mixed League Softball, Badminton, Squash, Curling, Golf, Fishing, and Camping.
Tessa Jewell
Tessa is in her second year with SLSC as a coach. Tessa swam with SLSC before attending and swimming with the Laurentian University Vees. Tessa is working with the Novice groups and the Swim Skills group.
Liam Wilson
Liam is starting his first season with us at SLSC. Liam is a graduate of the Laurentian Sports Psychology program and is also the Head Coach of the Laurentian Masters swimming program. Liam has a great interest in coaching as a profession and is vigorously pursuing his coaching certification. Liam is coaching our Level 3/Regional squad.
Beth Paulins
Beth is in her first year with SLSC. Beth is coming from Brantford Aquatic Club where she was a long time swimmer and started her coaching.
